This is the website of the research project, “South African Media and the New Geopolitics of Communication“. This projects hopes to provide some answers to pressing questions about the impact that new global players like China or Russia can have in the future of South African media. This project if funded by South Africa’s National Research Foundation.

 Ongoing research

The presence of Chinese media companies in South Africa’s media landscape has become a reality in recent years. As a relatively new phenomenon, there are many questions left to answer to fully understand the scope of China’s presence in the media sector. One of these questions has to do with the impact that China is having on South African media. To provide a comprehensive answer to this, the group is currently working on a multi-method audience study. Read more about it here.
